The transition from a 7-day to a 6-day workweek in Europe was driven by labour movements of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Workers, particularly during the 1st Industrial Revolution, often toiled 12–16 hours daily in harsh conditions. One major demand was a day off, typically Sunday, for rest. This, combined with rising productivity, set the stage for more labour reforms, ultimately leading to the 5-day workweek we recognize today.

AI Automation & Jobs

The potential impact of AI Automation on jobs is a sensitive topic. The standard statement we get is: "AI may automate some jobs, but it will also create new opportunities. Like previous technologies, it transforms rather than eliminates work". While this statement seems plausible, the truth is that we do not know how AI Automation will impact the job market. What we do know is that:

  1. Globalization of Skills: AI reduces the need for local expertise in some fields, as AI automation-driven services can operate globally, impacting job markets differently from past technological shifts.
  2. Speed and Scope of Change: AI Automation is evolving rapidly, potentially outpacing the ability of the workforce to re-skill in time. Automation could affect multiple sectors at once, unlike past revolutions that tended to be more gradual. Historically, technological advancements like electricity and computers took decades to have a significant impact on productivity. Agentic AI automation tools like n8n and Make.com are real and businesses rely on these tools to automate sales and marketing processes such as SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
  3. Cognitive Jobs at Risk: While previous revolutions mostly displaced manual labour, AI Automation can automate both cognitive and routine tasks, affecting white-collar jobs!
  4. Job Polarization: AI could contribute to greater polarization in the job market, where high-skilled roles increase, but mid-skilled jobs are eliminated, leaving low-skilled workers at risk.

The 4-day Workweek

While AI Automation has the potential to create new jobs, especially in tech, ethics, and governance, the transition might be bumpier and more unequal than before. The balance will depend on policy, retraining efforts, and how fast industries adapt. Organizations investing in AI Training will be better positioned to navigate this transition while maximizing the productivity benefits that enable shorter work schedules.

Further productivity increases however may open the door for a 4-day workweek. It could be the logical next step, after the rise of 'remote work'. Countries like Iceland, Spain, New Zealand, and the UK have run successful 4-day workweek trials. In the UK, for example, the employees were guaranteed 100% of their salary, despite cutting work time to 80%.

These programs generally showed that workers were just as productive, if not more so, despite working fewer hours. Many companies found reductions in burnout, improved mental health, and higher job satisfaction.

However, potential challenges of implementing the 4-day workweek include: potential loss of salary, reduced levels of customer service/experience due to longer waiting times and inequality in adoption across sectors and industries

Outlook

The 4-day workweek is likely to continue gaining ground, particularly in industries where AI automation can significantly enhance productivity. While widespread adoption is still in its early stages, the role of AI in automating and optimizing work processes will be pivotal in making a shorter workweek sustainable without sacrificing output.
